Thanks for this Brahms 4. It is reagarded as a classic. I have a set of 78's on the "grammophon" label, with a stamped portrait of the Sabata. The LP sounds like a direct transfer from 78s (or perhaps metal parts), but sometimes tape edits and other disturbances due to the tape can be heard.
ReplyDeleteHello Ed - thanks for your comment (and listening to the download!).
DeleteYes - quite correct about 'disturbances'. I edited-away some "bumps" (can't now recall everything done - but only had to correct relatively isolated instances of the suppressed 'surface' peeking-through (with EMI's I'd comment about Packburn pulse-residue I'd tend to remove: very time-consuming).
Presumably the tape copy was re-used for the later 3LP set (inc Furwangler).
The LP carries dead-wax copyright dates of 1939/1955 - presumably Galanta being a 1955 transfer - the other LP is 1949.
Unfortunately don't have the EMI XLP Concert Classics LP.
