ReplyDeleteI'd never been interested-enough to listen to these - but now realise what magnificent playing there is to be heard.
DeleteWhat should have been quite easy is proving to be otherwise due to the numerous retained 'blips': difficult to identify - so hope the other sides don't have some nasty surprises..
The 'cello tone seems very nice (certainly compared to a 'tremendous' sample available elsewhere)..
Wonderful post, great sound and magnificent playing indeed. Such is the devotion with which Casals approaches this music, that perhaps a more appropriate title would be something along the lines of 'The Adoration of Bach'. Needless to say I am looking forward to hear your transfers (these are simply excellent - the cello tone seems very much 'alive') of the rest of this musical worship.

ReplyDeleteI'm always interested in making available some of these older masterings as (it appears) they can be more 'convincing' than later efforts...and it also gives me an 'opportunity' to hear some previously unplayed LP's, I guess..

i have two digital replicas of these suites on both EMI Références & EMI GROC.
first was transferred and restored by Keith Hardwick. well done, but not the best of his digital works.
the second was transferred by Hardwick, but restored by his successor Andrew Walter. you can guess all my epithets against this monstrous figure...
your transfers are definitely better than any of these two sets.

DeleteWell..there aren't many instances of EMI UK using German EMI metalwork/matrices - and this 'Dacapo' issue precedes by about 5years Hardwick's being employed by EMI (I think: previously he was responsible for various SAGA/Allied 'Historical' issues from the early 1960's) - so I have no idea who did the re-mastering - presumably done in Germany (as, for example, my 2x 2LP Dacapo albums of Lotte Lehmann) but, as with the Fournier/Casals album, there are no restorers attributions - nor is there in the EMI UK box insert (a 'reprocessed stereo' text has been pasted-over..).
It seems this UK box set was available for about 10 years - so possibly later pressings were from imported tapes/mastered at EMI Hayes?

ReplyDeleteWhen I first started these blogs I uploaded some VEB Aurora 45 ep's from the early '60's - featuring Ernst Busch - one being the 2 discs of "Canciones de las Brigades Internationales" - containing songs from the Spanish Civil War..
