ReplyDeleteThis performance introduced me to the Elgar concerto and to British music, it was the very first British work I listened to (I was 17 or so).
I am still deeply involved with this performance. The Menuhin-Elgar recording is more perfect but Sammons plays the work with a conviction that I never found elsewhere. Some passages sound too rushed, but all the lyrical parts are incredible. From the first violin entrance one might imagine that this performance is very deep and melancholic. Thank you for this transfer, I lost my Naxos CD and I have had no chance of listening to this recording for a long time.
The 'missing button' was due to my taking a short-break.
ReplyDeleteVery many years since I'd listened to this performance and had forgotten how 'immersed' Sammons sounded - with some quite exquisite playing.
Had considered uploading Menuhin from the 1957 ALP as that was from Vinyl's instead of the later shellac transfer included in 'Images of Elgar' - both A.C.Griffith transfers.
May well upload Sammons' Delius VC , but want to find another work to add to that + B.Harrison (both from the LP including Delius' PC, below).
If my copy is anything to go by, Sammons Delius VC will be a challenge for you.
ReplyDeleteI have both Elgar and Delius on WRC both re-mastered by A.C.Griffith.There is appreciable more surface (shellac)noise on Delius.I find this difficult to understand as the Delius was a later recording then Sammons only version of Elger violin concerto.
Moiseiwitsch's Delius PC was very noisy (no metal masters available?) and many years since I listened to Sammons' Delius VC (may transfer the HQM Mozart Sinf.Concertante (with Tertis) - though have the 78s).
ReplyDeleteAll I do with these 78>LP files is correct bad edits (+ mangled 'repairs', if possible) and, mostly, remove 'blip residue' left behind by the de-clickers: though have to call a halt at some point (usually where they are not particularly noticeable above the general 'background').
