Thank you for this wonderful series
ReplyDeleteof transfers.
Novak
Hello Novak . Well, it's not just you who is downloading them!!.. I've a lot more in the 'historic' British Composers series. Given time might upload some more if they are not currently on CD.. The 'Belshazzar' here is quite remarkably good (far superior to the old ALP transfer) - but the later, mid-1980's, HMV Treasury are usually a bit too 'digital/clinical' for my liking (the Viola Concerto - very interesting to hear in the earlier orchestration - probably sounds totally different compared to my new original 78 set).
ReplyDeleteFascinating.A fabulous collection of English music, the historical interest is immense.
ReplyDeleteIf it is possible,I would like to make a plea for an underrated composer Sir Arthur Bliss.I have been exploring his music and finding it most rewarding.
'Delays' being what they are when it comes to the 'tortuous' editing process I had intended combining the previous Bliss pre-war 'Things' with his stereo version (RCA SB - original LP) - and was casting a glance towards a 1968 Readers Digest set where one LP is of him conducting the NPO (mainly British music). Do have the ancient Nixa/Concert Hall LP (new..) of Mewton-Wood playing the Piano Concerto - have a superb Ace of Clubs transfer of the Violin Concerto (Campoli) also ACL/LXT's of the Colour Symphony, etc..then there's the 'Checkmate' ballet - which sounds excellent in the original WRC pressing (not so good as SXLP) + quite a lot more (mostly later stereos). One of his compositions I like is the ASD 2 Piano Concerto (Smith/Sellick) - though that's on CD now (as with the Arnold; though the Jacob concerto hasn't been). Will see how things go - but don't want to exclusively concentrate on British music (which could easily keep me 'busy'....).
ReplyDeleteMany, many thanks for all of your transfers. I'm in awe of the vitality of many of these classic performances, so wonderfully realized by both the engineers and your transfer skills. James
ReplyDeleteHello James; thanks for the compliment.
DeleteReally, my 'skills' are no more than playing the LP's (properly with top class cartridges - likely a JVC X-1 shibata for this (otherwise a Stanton CS100) and engaging in some editing (was going to call it 'minor' - but you will have seen my various remarks about the time it takes!).
Not re-visited these files since 2010 - so would encounter the odd LP 'tick' having escaped detection.
