  1. This may be the best performance of this piece that there is. The only other one that I have heard was pretty dull.

It sounds absolutely amazing for it's age. Thanks for the transfer.

    1. Whilst idly browsing, yesterday, I saw a recent comment on the 'Unsung Composers' site [search: > draeseke drewes <] re: this; as a Naxos dubbing - and it wasn't considered very good.

The only problem with the recording is slight 'overloading' when matters get noisier; otherwise there is some nice sound/detail - though the music seems rather a 'compendium' of other composers 'styles' ?!

    2. Indeed. I don't find the composition particularly remarkable, but it was somewhat enjoyable listening. Though I say that this is probably the 'best' performance, I only say so in the face of the grand total recordings this symphony has: 3! (Or was it 4?). Ahh, well the number isn't that high.

    3. At least I got around to transferring this - as mentioned it as being 'next up' in October 2011 in the Pfitzner post below...

Unfortunately I don't have the other 'classical' material on Varese-Sarabande - except for one of the Rosza-conducted discs from 1957 - and this USA label must have had a limited UK distribution (the Varese-Sarabande 'musicals/soundtracks' matrices were UK pressed by 'That's Entertainment - and have 'lots').

    5. This is the one I'd previously alighted-upon to discover where 'the missing bit' was in the first movement of the Drewes.
The opening 'chord' was omitted here (did consider doing a copy/paste to 'remedy' that..as the notation, x3, was near-identical)...also happened with the original Urania LP??

I've *far too many* LP's to catch up on to even think of investigating Draeseke!

  2. i tend to like these rarely performed pieces by less-known composers (often, in my opinion, so rather by whim of fate than by deserve), and wasn't disappointed with this - very nice. The 'compendium'-style doesn't necessarily reflect lack of ideas, but perhaps just falling in between. Thanks!

    1. Rather better quality than the link - whose files I recall as 64mb mp3's
This era of radio tapes is now far more extensive on CD, etc - although I think the Soviets re-recorded over many after 1945.
The Pfitzner, below, is better - at least the Overture is - and have been planning for ages to upload the Leitner/BPO - Sym.2 + 3 Palestrina preludes, from 1959 - but I guess they'll be re-reissued again on CD in some large box-set
