ReplyDelete1980 was the year I 'discovered' Pfitzner - also being entranced by 'Herr Oluf' played on BBC R3 that year - so bought the Electrola album (F-Dieskau/BRSO/Sawallisch) - then the DG Leitner/BPO reissues (and Sawallisch's later Orfeo LP - followed by some older DGG pressings).

Pretty 'hefty' sound-quality: should give your HiFi (hopefully..) a 'workout'.

Ha! I knew I had "seen" this lp somewhere in blog land! I should have known it would be here! I have the lp and was thinking of dubbing it, but I'll save myself for some others in the series, which was quite a good one, between the Urania and Remington items that Varese Sarabande gave us. These tapes never had it half so good as their mastering and pressing quality. I was considering working on an old lp I have called "Korngold plays and conducts", on the Masterseal label. It's a nice gatefold package, but the pressing is eh.....not so hot. I did a bit of research and found that Varese Sarabande issued it on lp. So now I've got a used copy on the way to me! There seem to be no cd issues of any of this material. I've also got Spalding and Dohnanyi playing Dohnanyi's Violin Sonata (previously unissued) coupled with Enesco playing his 2nd Sonata. Also a Spalding Brahms Concerto, and Manuel Rosenthal conducting Offenbachiana (a sequel to the famous Gaite Parisienne). Is there anything else to look out for?

There are 2x US Decca Rozsa's (1957) on Varese-Sarabande - and I've VC 81058 - the other is at a silly price on eBay UK (not sold in year/s).
DeleteThe only other V-S I have are hereabouts (Draeseke/Enescu) - as the UK is not the best place to find US releases/imports from..
