ReplyDeleteI can recommend the ones I mentioned..but the Bax is 'grungy' - due to the shellac - (and not too well-played - or recorded..) . "These Things" (have also on new 78s - as with the Quilter) is very good for some sides (from vinyl's) - but the rest are clearly inferior - but such an excellent performance.

ReplyDeleteCost me £6.70... I was reading-up on the Dutton version of the Bax but not sure (unless EMI were using a bad PU cartridge) that the frequently 'discolored sound' could be eradicated (and I needed to edit quite a bit). There is only one more to come in the 1980's HMV Treasury featuring British works (discounting the 4LP Boult/LPO Elgar box) - that's RVW 6, etc LSO/LPO/Boult + the RVW (Flos campi/Violin Conc.) from the Walton Viola/Sinf Concertante LP, below.

Hello Novak . I'll admit to some doubts about quite a few performances/compositions in this & the Leslie Heward uploads; though this weeks Boult/Vaughan Williams uploads will be 'of high quality'.
ReplyDeleteThanks again - I see what you mean about the Bax being a bit grungy, but no worries, I'm enjoying the earlier performances, they sound a bit more 'English' to my untrained Kiwi ear - probably a case of sounding like the contemporary classical radio broadcasts as they were played in the background of my childhood!
ReplyDeleteI had intended uploading the Downes/LSO version of the Bax 3 (not on CD) before this - but ran into difficulties with surface noise (the prospect of long-hours 'hard-labour) - along with some other Bax (the RPO/Buketoff - also a live BBC PO/Handley recital from a few years ago).
ReplyDeleteI don't think many of the Wartime performances (especially Heward's) are better than 'average provincial' standard - and the amount of 'trivia' is a bit disappointing - but do believe that the recording-quality 'gets in the way' of the Bax 3 - and probably colours my opinion of the standard of playing!

ReplyDeleteThank you very much for these and the previous HMV Treasury issues. From the perspective of an Ireland fan, these performances are absolutely wonderful (and how much more urgency and drive is in JB's These Things Shall Be than Boult's more stolid rendering on Lyrita!).
ReplyDeleteBarbirolli certainly gets a fine result. Not heard the Boult - but there's 'an age-problem' with his later recordings (ditto Barbirolli) - so it's a pity EMI didn't give Barbirolli an opportunity to record much English music in the years before he left for PYE.
