Copied in its entirety by someone on Symphonyshare without any attribution - then claimed not to exist on the blog. The two individuals operating that site spivvily allowed that deception. Newly re-edited from the unamended edited 2013 WAV. The somewhat slapdash Eileen Joyce track now added to complete the LP.

    1. Last years files: and without a very small degree of de-clicking there would have been good-presence of more than the music...

The String Quartet receives a splendid performance (and my only version).

    1. Well ...you did ask for it - so as there were other requests (long ago) I had to edit the file/s sometime; actually very easy after the auto de-click.

The other tracks are nice: Telmanyi is really fine: but have heard no more of his playing (but have some other original Budapest Qt - on 78's - Beethoven/Schubert).

    2. Indeed it is - tho i haven't heard other versions of the Romance, nor the other pieces herein!

Budapest Qt Beethoven/Schubert? At least their reputation is great, hah!

    3. Telmanyi also rec the Nielseon concerto , and sonatas 1 & 2, and his [Brahms'] FAE mvt. Danacord CDs.

    5. About 25years ago had the opportunity to buy, very very cheaply, Telmanyi's Decca/Bach LP's (LXT 2951-3: now/was on Testament 2CD) - though probably would have had then sold it to Violin'n'Cello Land/s.
So a lack of knowledge, at the time, about the merits of 'before my time' material (or the explosion in 'value' of Violin/Cello LP's..).

      Anyway..still not played my new 1950's Heifetz/LM's - Menuhin/ALP's of the same Partita's/Sonatas...but do like Telmanyi's 'style'...so might get a CD or two...or find a download.......

  3. Wonderful music - except, expectedly and unfortunately, the quite "provincial" performance by Finnish players that doesn't quite fit in with the rest here..

The sound did not suffer from de-clicking, by the way!

    1. 'Provincial' happened to be my reason, last year, for not dubbing the 'famous' Eileen Joyce disc..

I cannot use de-clicked files as the 'default' as that process masks detail.

The Telmanyi was already edited, then processed @ 1.3 (same setting as Dvorak/Boskovsky): the others @ 1.7 - those then checked for any retained/audible faults (made more difficult to identify).
The +2dB treble was slightly arbitrary - but the 'de-clicked' Telmanyi became 'more identical' to my reference hand-edited .wav. (those who downloaded that file previously can compare them).

Neither does 'de-click' solve the problem of noisy shellac surfaces: I use it @ 6 - 7): thereafter 'sluggishness' becomes too obvious: so more experimentation is required using some other 'method'...

    2. Yes - i had others than the SQ before and i'd have to at least use earphones to notice any 'deterioration' in the detail, unlike the obvious improvements.

  4. Thank you for making these recordings available. I've owned this LP for years but don't have the equipment to play it any more, so it was lovely to be able to hear it again. Is there any chance you could add the Romance in D flat which ends side 2?

    1. My instinct is to say 'NO' - as am not going to re-upload the 4 file zip FLAC - and doubt if 'anyone' requires about another 3 minutes-worth of piano-tinkling after I've transcribed/edited/uploaded (more than once) the complete HMV Society edition, etc.

Her performance will be on CD now (think there's a 'complete edition' recently) - and it was only anyway added to the LP as a 'filler': presumably Henri Temianka's Humeresque no.4 (a Parlophone disc) wasn't added instead as it is Chamber Orch. accompanied.

  5. Other Budapest Quartet recordings from 78 rpm recording? Modestly, and with kind consideration for the endless work involved, you should transfer ALL of them - especially the Schubert recordings! The quality of Some of the past transfers issued by EMI (Japan) and Columbia (US) are considered in a review which appeared years ago in the Journal of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections at:

    http://www.arsc-audio.org/journals/v11/v11n2-3p191-205.pdf

The Columbia/Odyssey (US) issues referred to in that review (which I have) were taken from the collection of R. Peter Munves. He was, I think, at some point an "executive" at Columbia. He has recently been selling his extensive 78 rpm collection on ebay.

    Best regards from over here,
    David Mendes

  6. Having seen the prices now demanded for 'shellac' on ebay.com/.co.uk I rather regret having 'trod-on' so many whilst they were being stored/perambulated around..so am really not now best-placed to do too many transfers from that 'material' (particularly Chamber) - and would definitely have to apply a charging-regime to acquire more (originally most cost between 1 to 10 pence each..)...and anyway forever 'dither' as to how best (sic) to transfer wretched UK shellac.

I do 'read' ARSC - though only downloaded a few .pdfs (sort of 'randomly found') - but thanks for that (now only have the 'Quartettsatz' amongst 78 Schubert) and cannot recall a UK issue of the recommended Anthony Griffith transfers (Toshiba-Angel: 5LP's) mentioned there - but the 'imperfections' alluded to are possibly of a type that I 'enthusiastically' remove (de-click residue/silent gaps/slightly dodgy edits: not too strange when derived from analogue tape/editing).

So, sadly, I can't offer that particular issue..

    1. They don't sound too bad - but I can't say 'my efforts' enable me to play many LP's for myself!
